Magnesium is a cofactor for the enzyme creatine kinase, which forms ATP from phosphocreatine stored in muscle tissue during intense physical exercise (a phenomenon known as anaerobic lactic acid metabolism). In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of 25 healthy male volleyball players with normal magnesium levels, supplementation with 350 mg of magnesium oxide for 4 weeks supported muscle function in combination with intense physical exercise by improving anaerobic lactic acid metabolism. Following supplementation, lactic acid production during rigorous physical exercise was significantly reduced in the magnesium group compared to baseline measurements.
