5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a precursor of serotonin biosynthesis. It is synthesized from L-tryptophan, an essential amino acid found naturally in dietary proteins such as turkey and milk, and requires vitamin B6 as a co-factor. 5-HTP is produced primarily by the enterochromaffin cells of the gastrointestinal tract as well as by the raphe nuclei of the brain stem where it is then converted to serotonin. Serotonin produced in the gastrointestinal tract stimulates physiological functions including vasoconstriction, uterine contraction, bronchoconstriction, gastrointestinal motility and platelet aggregation1. At the brain level, serotonin inhibits excitatory neurotransmission and modulates wakefulness, attention, psychological attitude (anxiety and depression), sexual behavior, appetite, thermoregulation, motor skills, migraines, vomiting, nociception and aggressiveness.
Adults: Take 1 capsule three times daily or as recommended by your healthcare professional. To minimize the risk of gastrointestinal upset, start at 50-100 mg, 2 to 3 times daily and gradually increase to the effective dose over a 2-week period. Take with food. For fibromyalgia symptoms, use for at least 2 weeks to see beneficial effects. Consult a health care practitioner for use beyond one year.
